Lange&Eckert Fine Art
I'm a mixed media visual artist with a passion for drawing the figure. The complexities of the human form pose a special problem for the artist who doesn't rely on formulas for drawing the figure. There are no quick and easy methods for drawing, no "drawing for dummies" approach that can lead to a real understanding the the human form. There are no shortcuts.
I have no interest in making my work look like a photograph. Photos speak their own language. I would rather my work looks raw, made by hand and without a slick gloss.

Memento Mori
The Santa Maria Novella church in Florence, Italy, has a pile of human bones behind glass with the inscription, ""I was once what you are, and what I am you will become". That quote inspired this work.

Allie: pool of fate
This is a drawing of a model made directly from life. I find drawings from life to be a bit more animated than drawings from photographs. When I made this drawing, I was thinking about all of the noise that bombards our lives on a daily basis; social media, multiple forms of communication, ads everywhere and the actual noise of leaf blowers, weed whackers and mowers. It's hard to concentrate at times.

Face of History
I think we are doomed to repeat stupid mistakes over and over again. How have we, as a species, been able to survive this long?

Expulsion
Often I'll make a non-objective, somewhat monochromatic monotype, the focus of which is texture and composition. This gives me something to consider and respond to. Honestly, I sometimes don't have any idea about what a work could become. My favorite works are those that surprise me. This work arose out of that idea.

Missing Link
My interest in the natural world runs parallel to my fascination with science and technology. We have become connected, plugged-in and reliant on technology to navigate the complex world in which we live. In some respects, this bombardment of tech has had the effect of distancing us from one another and from the natural world, supplanting the real while embracing the virtual space. Hence, Missing Link.

Father and Child
I made this drawing to remind me not to be a blockhead with my daughter. I hope it worked.

The Bride
A young woman confronts a lovely wedding dress and contemplates her future with her soon to be spouse. The drawing on the wall behind her, is an Edgar Degas work that depicts (I believe), the drudgery of domestic life - a woman ironing a piece of clothing while staring off into the distance. This is a simple pastel drawing on artist grade sandpaper.

Falling Head
I made this drawing a few months after returning from Italy. I don't recall what my motivation for tilting the models head was but I suspect it had something to do with my visit to Pisa to see the leaning tower. This work was made using ink, watercolor and pastel on a monotype.

A Man of False Letters
For me, artworks evolve. I don't often have a preconceived notion of what I am doing or making. The visual image helps me to understand better what I am thinking about. I can't say what this drawing is about but I hope it evokes some ideas for the viewer to contemplate.

Stranded
For the last 15 years or so, I led a study abroad in art during the month of June to various cities in Europe. It was quite a daunting task to be responsible for a dozen or more students. Occasionally, I'd have dreams (nightmares really) about how unprepared I was for the trip. Hence this pastel drawing of a flustered traveler.

Counting Clown
I have the unenviable habit of counting trivial stuff. For example, I'll count the number of steps it takes to go from my front entrance to the mailbox or how many steps there are in a flight of stairs. So I consider this small work to be somewhat of a self-portrait even though it's derived from an in-class drawing from the model.

The American Dream?
The American Dream is just that, a dream. At least for most people. This drawing began as a study from the model, a young man making a few extra dollars posing for a portrait drawing class. Around the same time that I made this drawing, I happened to be reading a book by my very good friend, Robert Hauhart, Seeking the American Dream: A Sociological Inquiry. I felt that the model's expression suggested a vulnerability about his uncertain future and so I added the text elemen
