The American Dream?

The American Dream is just that, a dream. At least for most people.

This drawing began as a study from the model, a young man making a few extra dollars posing for a portrait drawing class. Around the same time that I made this drawing, I happened to be reading a book by my very good friend, Robert Hauhart, Seeking the American Dream: A Sociological Inquiry. I felt that the model's expression suggested a vulnerability about his uncertain future and so I added the text elements to give the drawing an additional meaning.
