I'm a mixed media visual artist with a passion for drawing the figure. The complexities of the human form pose a special problem for the artist who doesn't rely on formulas for drawing the figure. There are no quick and easy methods for drawing, no "drawing for dummies" approach that can lead to a real understanding the the human form. There are no shortcuts.
I have no interest in making my work look like a photograph. Photos speak their own language. I would rather my work looks raw, made by hand and without a slick gloss.
I have several iris plants in my garden. All of them are the standard purple color which are quite beautiful. But one year, a black iris appeared and it seemed so wonderful to me. Kind of dark and mysterious. I photographed it and then made a pigment and pastel drawing to remember what a wonderful specimen it was. I've never seen it since.
